Kathmandu: After witnessing prolonged dry spell that aggravated the drinking water shortage inside the Kathmandu Valley, the local communities have come together to revive the wells and water spouts.

On Friday, local communities in different parts of the Valley observed Sithi Nakha, a Newari festival dedicated to cleaning up traditional wells, water spouts and water sources.

KATHMANDU: Pipes have been laid down in the Kathmandu Valley along the total stretch of 350 km for the distribution of drinking water to be supplied after the completion of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.
It is the half of the total length of the pipeline to be installed in the Valley.

Similarly, of the total 61 km stretch of pipeline to be installed for the retail distribution of drinking water, pipes have been laid along only 22 km as of now, according to the Project Implementation Directorate (PID) under the Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Project (KUKL).

A couple of years ago, a college trip took my classmates and I to the Gujeshwori Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kathmandu. On my part, it was a well-anticipated trip as I had many questions about why the river systems of Kathmandu were so polluted and what was being done to stymie the unrelenting flow of dirty water into the Bagmati. In retrospect, I was convinced that all the sewage channels to the rivers must be completely blocked and all the waste water redirected. Where? I had no idea. But I was convinced that there had to be a sustainable solution.
