Lalitpur: Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved an assistance of $ 500,000 for waste management in Nepal. According to the Ministry of Local Development, the Government of Nepal will also provide $ 100,000 for the project, which was launched recently. The 14-month project will focus on policy, strategy, capacity-building, analysis and regulations, said ADB officials at an event jointly organised today with the ministry.
Sushil Ghimire, secretary at the MoLD, said waste management was a challenge in the country. “The new Waste Management Act has provisioned strong action against the violators, but it should be effectively implemented for expected results.” The parliament on May 26 approved the Waste Management Act that provisions jail sentence up to three months against those disrupting waste disposal. The Act includes waste segregation system at homes, waste management, public-private partnership, treatment of hazardous waste by producers themselves and environment protection. Public will not be allowed to throw waste wherever they like. They should throw it at fixed locations. “Cooperation is necessary to implement the law,” said Dr. Sumitra Amatya, executive director at the SWMTSC. Source: The Himalayan Times, August 10, 2011 |
