Kathmandu: Most of the public toilets operated by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) are in pitiable condition. Open defecation and urination is on rise in the capital city owing to the lack of proper maintenance and cleanliness of public toilets. The KMC has not paid much heed towards the construction of new toilets despite the growing population in the city.

Chief of the Environment Division at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Rabin Man Shrestha said that no plan was made to build additional public toilets as road widening task was the first priority of the KMC for now. He also admitted that the KMC was not in a condition to improve the standards of the public toilets. The government has launched open defecation free campaigns in different districts of the country but the government has failed to materialize the campaign even in the capital city.
