WATSAN WEEKLY NEWS DIGEST
Vol.5 No. 273, August 15, 2011

Dear Readers,

A recent analysis on the data prepared by the Ministry of Education revealed that on average, one toilet in community school serves 127 students in Nepal, almost three times the prescribed number. According to Nepal Government policy, one toilet must serve not more than 50 students. Of Nepal’s 28,000 community schools, only 18,000 have toilets – with only 5580 providing separate toilets for girls. It is unfortunate that community schools in the capital city itself lack separate toilet for girls. Only 32 percent schools in Kathmandu have separate toilets for girls. This shows that government is not paying serious attention in maintaining sanitation in schools.

Construction of toilet in school is as important as the construction of school building itself. Menstruating girl students often remain absent due to lack of separate toilets for them in schools. Lack of girl-friendly toilet is one of the major causes of girl students' drop out in schools thus affecting the goals in education. Construction of girl-friendly toilets will not only decrease the drop out rate of the girl students but also increase enrollment of girl students in school. Therefore, the government should not be late in promoting toilet construction in schools for the students. While education being the top priority in government investments, investment in WASH will certainly contribute in achieving the desired results of a huge investment in education.
